I’m more than just a residential and commercial locksmith in Medway. Part of my job involves providing information and advice to home owners about staying safe. A few years ago, I was working as a locksmith in Gillingham and was assisting in securing a property which made me think about home security procedures.
Don’t make yourself an obvious target by following the tips below:
Use light timers to create the impression that you are home:
Opportunist thieves look for signs that no one is at home to break into the property. There are certain tell tale signs that no one is in your home. One of them is keeping all lights out or allowing certain lights to be on for a very long period of time. When you install light timers, they create the impression that you are home even when you are not. This is because light timers would occasionally switch your lights on and off. This is a basic but effective tip to keep out opportunist thieves.
Lock tools and ladders inside:
Do not make the mistake of keeping heavy tools that can be used in breaking into your home within sight. This would constitute a great appeal to potential home breakers. Also ensure that items such as ladders are always kept indoors. Leaving a ladder outside your home may put your home at risk of breaking and entering.
Fit grilles or bars to all windows:
For commercial properties fitting bars to windows that are within reach is essential to avoid after-dark break ins. This is very common with side windows. Always have grilles or bars installed on all windows.
Replace locks when you move into a new home:
Most people do not bother about changing their locks when they move into a new house. This is a fatal mistake. Always change your locks when you move into a new house. This is to ensure that you are in total control of all entry points into your house. Previous tenants could have duplicated keys or given spares away to families and friends. Changing your locks guarantees your security.
Deadbolts are recommended:
Deadbolts are recommended for a superior home security. If possible, get a deadbolt on all entry points into your home. One thing you should never bargain with is that the main entry point into your home must be secured by a deadbolt.
Be careful with your spare key:
Most opportunist criminals know how home owners think especially the elderly ones who are more vulnerable to mistakes. Do not keep you spare key under the door mat or in the mail box. Criminals expect your spare key to be there so do not play into their hands.
Do not advertise your absence:
Do not announce to the world that you are away or far from home. People make this mistake on social media, some even write notes and attach it to their doors. This is an open invitation to criminals to take their time to plan a successful robbery of your valuable possessions.
Do not leave equipment packaging outside the house:
Do not create instances for thieves to know that you have valuables in your home. If you just bought a home theatre set, do not leave the packaging where people can easily estimate the worth of what you have inside your home. If you create a big motivation for thieves then you may encounter a big robbery attack.
Lock up your Garage and Sheds:
Always bear in mind that garages and shed contain equipments that may make breaking and entering easier for opportunist thieves. Never forget to lock up your garage and sheds even when you are at home.
Install CCTV and Intruder alarms:
Again this is primarily for businesses, consider getting CCTV and Intruder alarms for the property. CCTV and Intruder alarms have been proven over time to keep businesses safe even in towns that have a high incidence of breaking and entering and burglary.
Cultivate a good relationship with your neighbours:
Develop a friendly relationship with your neighbours. They can help you secure your home in your absence. Aside of keeping your home in sight, friendly neighbours can help you remove letters, mails and packages from your front door when you are not at home. This ensures that your home does not become easy target for opportunist criminals.
